“Sugar Dragon” Dragon Fruit

Also known as S-8 or 8-S, Sugar Dragon is one of the most successful varieties of dragon fruit bred by Paul Thompson. 

Sugar Dragon is considered by many to be one of, if not the best variety to grow, both for backyards and commercial application. It is one of the most productive, sweet, and flavorful options. 

This variety is also widely regarded as the best universal pollinator available. It has a very long flowering window, providing pollen throughout the dragonfruit season. Sugar dragon can produce 6-10 fruits on a single branch when grown correctly.

The fruit is smaller, weighing ½ to ¾ pounds. However, Sugar Dragon easily makes up for its small stature with exceptional productivity, sweetness, and flavor complexity. 

Sugar Dragon’s taste is one of the most unique and impressive of any dragon fruit variety. It has incredible sweetness, surpassing 20 on brix readings. The flavor is fascinating, with a very noticeable rosewater perfume that has a nearly intoxicating effect on the taste buds.

This is a relatively cold tolerant variety.
