Description

Sharwils are often considered the best tasting avocado in the world. ‘Sharwil’ fruit vary from oval to slightly pear-shaped. The skin is green when ripe, is bumpy and of medium thickness, and peels easily. The seed is small compared to fruit size, and the seed is roundish and not elongated. Most fruit weigh about 8–16 ounces, and about 74% of the fruit is flesh.

The ‘Sharwil’ avocado is a green-ripe variety and is ready to use when it is soft to the touch. ‘Sharwil’ avocados have a high oil content and excellent creamy, nutty flavor. ‘Sharwil’ avocados have an average oil content of 28%. In comparison, ‘Hass’ has an average oil content of 21%.

Sharwil is my absolute favorite avocado tree! Originally bred in Australia, Sharwil became popular in Hawaii, where it was able to handle the excess rain, unlike Hass, which requires a much drier climate. The fruit is unparalleled in taste. The seed is tiny, the flesh texture is lusciously smooth. The flavor is perfect.

In avocado taste tests, Sharwil consistently beat out every other named variety of avocado, including Hass. It has it all! The single major drawback levied against Sharwil is that the skin does not turn black when ripe! This feature alone removes it as a candidate for large-scale, consumer avocados. This is why you wont find Sharwil avocados in the grocery store–they dont turn black! But when it comes to fruit production and flavor, nothing beats Sharwil.

Sharwil is a type B avocado.
